How to fix a broken optical cable

Update Time:2025-04-24Traffic:

If the cable is broken, the following steps can be taken to repair it:

  First, fault location and preparation

  Determine the fracture location:

Use equipment such as fiber optic testers to detect fiber optic cable lines and determine the specific location of the break.

  Prepare repair tools and materials:

According to the type of fracture and the specific situation, prepare the necessary repair tools, such as fiber stripper, fiber cutter, fusion splicer (or cold splicer), fiber heat shrinkable sleeve, fiber cleaning paper, etc.

Make sure that the quality and performance of all tools and materials meet the repair requirements.

  Second, cable connection

Remove the outer skin of the optical cable:

Use fiber stripping pliers to peel off the outer skin of the broken part of the fiber optic cable to expose the fiber core.

The stripping length should be determined according to the requirements of the splice box or connector.

Clean the fiber optic end face:

Use special optical fiber cleaning paper or alcohol cotton balls and other tools to thoroughly clean the end face of the optical fiber to remove dust, grease and other impurities.

  Fiber optic connection:

Select the appropriate connection method according to the actual situation, such as welding or cold bonding.

Welding method: Use a welding machine to weld the end faces of the two optical fibers together. This method has low connection loss and stable quality, but requires professional welding machines and equipment, which is costly.

Cold connection method: Use a quick connector (cold connector) to connect the fiber. This method is simple to operate, does not require a welding machine, and is suitable for field operations or temporary repairs, but the connection loss is relatively large.

  Fixing and protection:

Fix the connected fiber in the splice box or connector.

Use protective materials such as optical fiber heat shrinkable sleeves to protect the joining parts to prevent the optical fiber from being damaged by external forces or environmental influences and breaking again.

  III. Testing and Verification

  Test conduction status:

Use a fiber optic test pen or fiber optic tester to test whether the connected fiber optic cable line is conducting.

  Verify transmission performance:

When necessary, conduct transmission performance tests to ensure that the transmission performance of the optical cable line meets the design requirements.

  IV. On-site processing and recovery

  Organize the scene:

After the restoration is completed, tidy up the site and clean up the garbage and waste.

  Restore communication:

Notify the computer room for testing to verify the availability of the fiber optic cable line.

After confirming availability, restore communication service as soon as possible.

  V. Precautions

  Safety first:

During the repair process, safety operating procedures should be strictly followed to prevent accidents such as electric shock and fire.

  Professional operation:

Fiber optic cable connection is a highly technical task that should be handled by trained technicians.

  Quality Assurance:

It is necessary to ensure that the quality of all connection points meets the design requirements to reduce connection losses and failure rates.

  Periodic inspection:

Periodically inspect and maintain the optical cable line to detect and deal with potential safety hazards in a timely manner.

Through the above steps and precautions, broken optical cable lines can be effectively repaired to ensure the stability and reliability of the communication network.
